New Solar Vacuum Furnace, Expanded Heat Treating Capabilities…

Mumetal June 3, 2020

As we enter the final stretch leading up to the installation and deployment of our new Solar Vacuum Furnace, we thought we’d spend some more time dwelling on the benefits of being able to offer expanded heat treating mumetal capabilities to our customers.

To start, let’s retrace what we’ve already mentioned in the past…

Solar Manufacturing furnaces are used to heat-treat manufactured parts such as:

  • Micro-surgical instruments
  • Aircraft/aerospace components
  • Military defense components
  • Magnetic shields
  • Implants
  • Tooling
  • Gears
  • Weldments
  • Structural components
  • Castings
  • Sheet
  • Tube and pipe
  • Braze assemblies
  • Much, much more…

MuShield has a longstanding history of heat treating our mumetal magnetic shields to maximum magnetic permeability using our in-house hydrogen furnaces and trusted vacuum heat treat suppliers. Now that we are bringing a state of the art vacuum furnace onto our floor, we are taking the next step in our growth as a company and plan on having this furnace earn the esteemed NADCAP accreditation.

This new vacuum furnace will enable MuShield to keep almost all of the heat treating work we’re contracted to do in house, which, in turn will increasingly keep costs and lead times down for our customers – new and old. This is a product of the bolstered technology our new Solar Furnace will be equipped with, and the expanded footprint it allows us to operate with in the internal chamber itself. The furnace is built with a SolarVac® Polaris control system and is fully compliant to AMS2750E pyrometric specifications. The referenced expanded internal footprint is designed to accommodate loads of up to 36” wide x 36” high x 72” deep, with a maximum weight of 5,000 lbs. That is some serious business right there… The working envelope of this furnace is, in fact, more than double that of our current heat treat setup. What this means in a nutshell is, the more parts we’re able to run at a given time, again, will keep our costs and lead times down for our customers. Also, parts that were too large for our old furnace setup can be knocked out in the new unit.

What the furnace also provides us with is the opportunity to be able to heat treat different alloys other than our high nickel alloys. Jobs we were previously unable to quote before will be fair game and possible, enabling us to be able to run those desired jobs for both repeat and new customers alike. Finally, MuShield is your one-stop shop for most heat treating needs.

As we continue along with the MuShield expansion, the aforementioned long term goal of our heat treating service area is to get our newly equipped Solar Vacuum Furnace NADCAP certified, which is an aerospace accreditation for special processes such as heat treating. In the interim, to accomplish this, we’ll have to continue to send out parts that require a NADCAP certified furnace. So becoming certified is imperative to keeping this service offering as close to the vest as we possibly can. Because, keeping everything in house does what? You guessed it. Keeps costs and lead time down – all to the benefit of you, or loyal and appreciated customer pool.

Have any questions about MuShield’s heat treating capabilities? Let’s jump on a line and hash it out. We’re happy to help with any challenges you may be faced with that you’re looking to accomplish to push the greater project across that finish line.
